Riverside Stadium*

Being the first new stadium constructed in the UK under the new safety regulations, the project team were effectively pioneers. The lessons from this, and subsequent stadium projects, established best practices that are still the basis for stadium design and construction in the UK today.

Riverside Stadium was the first new stadium to be constructed after the safety standards overhaul of the late 1980’s. Constructed as a focal point of Teesside Development Corporation’s Middlesbrough Dockland Reclamation, the stadium was built to a very economical budget of £16 million, with a capacity of 30,000 seats.

Paul Haggath was the on-site project manager and worked with the contractor to develop economical design and construction solutions. The project was a fast track Design & Build contract. Pre-fabricated modular steel frame and precast decking helped to optimise construction periods. Hospitality and public welfare facilities were incorporated into the design. The project team delivered the project to an extremely tight programme and budgetary constraints, with construction delivery in just 42 weeks.

Lessons to be shared

Innovative and economical structural design solutions were needed to meet the tight budgetary constraints of the project. These solutions were adopted in many subsequent stadium builds.

Being the first new stadium constructed in the UK under the new safety regulations, the project team were effectively pioneers. The lessons from this, and subsequent stadium projects, established best practices that are still the basis for stadium design and construction in the UK today.
