UV Filtration Rapid Rollout

UV water treatment at various locations across the Queenstown Lakes district

Date: October 2023 – December 2023

Client: Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC)

Project Location: Queenstown

Services Provided: Project Management

Following the outbreak of Cryptosporidium in late 2023, which resulted in a protracted boil-water notice across the district, TEAM Projects was engaged on short notice to manage the rapid deployment of UV treatment to multiple water supply sources in the district. The outbreak and subsequent boil water notice was of national interest and needed to be responded to with immediacy to alleviate the disruption on residents and the QLDC economy.

The UV Rapid Deployment Project (now called the UV Compliance Response Project) project was established as an emergency response to ensure QLDC met and complied with the Drinking Water Quality Assurance Rules 2022 (DWQAR).

Reporting directly to the Property & Infrastructure General Manager and the Infrastructure Operations Manager, TEAM Projects led successful rapid procurement and installation of three major UV Treatment Plants within a 4-month period. These installations were the largest and most urgent systems treating the majority of both Wanaka’s and Queenstown’s water supplies. Two of these were installed and commissioned within a two-month period and pre-Christmas 2023, enabling the boil-water notice to be lifted in time for the summer holiday season.
