DART 2 was a $65m rail corridor widening project through central Newmarket, Auckland. The project required the widening and reconstruction of two road overbridges, significant structural works to widen the rail corridor within a deep cutting and difficult volcanic terrain, dual tracking of the existing single rail track, and futureproofing for electrification of the railtracks.

Paul Haggath led the team in restructuring the project into an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) design and construct project with a target outturn cost. Innovative design and construction was incentivised with cost savings shared between the client and the contractor.

The project was delivered to time and significantly below budget due to the collaborative approach of the whole project team.

Lessons to be shared

Adopting a cost share form of contract was a brave move for the client but one which paid dividends. Financial incentivisation to save money assisted in building truly collaborative teams and a true win-win outcome for all parties.
