The upgrade and refurbishment of the historic Theatre Royal for the Timaru District Council includes upgrading of the Theatre Royal together with the design and construction of a new Museum. The co-location of facilities on one site will provide opportunities for connections and shared spaces, via a Laneway providing interaction between the Theatre Royal and the Museum and reinvigoration of the area.
The upgraded Theatre Royal will provide a modernised, fit for purpose theatre allowing for more local productions and touring entertainment to perform in Timaru. Being closed since 2019 having been deemed earthquake prone, there is significant structural strengthening required. The Theatre Royal has historical and social significance and is designated as Category 2 by Heritage New Zealand.
The construction of a new Museum will enable public exhibitions, education and program spaces in a new purpose-built facility. The Laneway will serve as a key element to the concept by connecting the 2 buildings with a public open space and pedestrian precinct, plus service vehicle access.
